đ Budget Cuts Could Break the Backbone of American Healthcare
America Needs Nurses stands with the nursing community against proposed funding cuts.
As the U.S. healthcare system faces one of the worst nursing shortages in history, the proposed FY 2026 federal budget threatens to make things even worse. Deep cuts to nursing education, research, and Medicaid support would accelerate burnout, shrink the pipeline of future nurses, and leave patientsâespecially in rural and underserved communitiesâwithout the care they need.
At America Needs Nurses, we believe this is more than a policy debate. Itâs a public health emergency in the making. And it demands our collective voice, now more than ever.

đ The Elimination of Title VIII: A Blow to Nursing Education
One of the most alarming pieces of the proposed budget is the elimination of Title VIII Nursing Workforce Development Programs, which provide over $300 million annually to support nurse education, retention, and faculty training.
âThese federal dollars are absolutely critical,â says Tim Nanof, EVP of Policy at the American Nurses Association. âWithout Title VIII, weâre dismantling the very foundation of our nursing pipeline.â
America Needs Nurses strongly supports the preservation and expansion of Title VIII. Cutting funding now, when weâre already short hundreds of thousands of nurses, is not only shortsightedâitâs dangerous.
𧏠Ending the National Institute for Nursing Research?
The proposal also aims to eliminate the National Institute for Nursing Research (NINR), the only NIH body solely focused on nursing science. While the NIH claims this work will be redistributed, Nanof warns:
âThe loss of a dedicated nursing research institute will stall innovation and harm patient outcomes.â
Nursing research isnât optionalâitâs a critical part of advancing care models, reducing hospital readmissions, and improving long-term health outcomes for Americans. We must protect it.
đž Medicaid Cuts Will Hit Patients and Nurses Alike
Proposed reductions in Medicaid, which supports roughly 1 in 5 hospital dollars, will have devastating ripple effects. Rural hospitals may be forced to close. Nurses will lose jobs. And patientsâespecially those in underserved regionsâwill have nowhere to turn.
âThese proposals will make outcomes worse for American consumers,â Nanof says. âEspecially in rural and low-income urban areas.â
America Needs Nurses opposes any policy that restricts access to care, reduces provider capacity, or threatens the well-being of nurses.
đ· This Is Not the Time to Abandon Nurses
Nurses are still carrying the emotional scars of COVID-19, rising violence in the workplace, and chronic understaffing. Instead of offering relief, this budget proposes pulling the rug out from under them.
Letâs be clear: defunding nursing programs now will hurt everyoneâpatients, providers, and the public at large.
